She will bite her tongue
As hard as she trusts
For as long as she must
Because that will keep the peace
His peace

She will breathe deep
As deep as she can
For as long as the man
Requires the silence
Her silence

She will tighten her fist
To keep from shouting
Then she will swallow her pride to keep from crying
Because that’s what he says shows strength

She’ll stop walking behind him
As soon as she may
But the faster she paces
The faster he passes
As if with something to prove
But is it about her?
About him?
Or neither?
Right now She’ll just bite her tongue, breathe deep and wonder.
